Chapter Twenty-one

Sacramento, California

Tyler was exhausted, drained during their overnight cross-country flight by hours of guilt and worry. Guilt over keeping secrets and worry about Bree discovering the truth without the two of them there to explain. The catnap she managed on the plane wasn’t enough, nor were the short nap and shower she took at her and Ethan’s hotel suite after landing.

Ethan poured two cups of coffee when Tyler emerged from one of the bedrooms. “I had breakfast brought up. Coffee?” he offered.

“God, yes.” Tyler struggled to shake off her fatigue and gladly accepted the cup before firing up her laptop. “Have you thought about what we’re going to tell her?”

“It’s time to tell her everything.” Ethan checked his laptop, too. “Good news. Marco came through with Paul’s new work and home addresses. This will save hours of research.” He jotted down the information from his old partner, who still worked for the Sacramento PD. “We should start at his home. Anything new from Maddie?”

Tyler logged on and scanned through her emails. The top one was from her friend and business partner, Maddie. “Hold on, she just sent me something.” She mumbled as she read. “No one’s heard from Bree. She’ll keep us posted. She wants to know if I’m okay since Alex’s video hit the news.” Maddie’s note confused Tyler. She looked up. “Do you know what video she’s talking about?”

Ethan shrugged. “I have no idea. Let me check this email from the lab that’s testing Syd’s wine, then we should get going if we want to find Paul before Bree does and remind him of the restraining order.”

Tyler waved him off. “Give me a minute.” Maddie had her worried that there was more terrible news involving Alex. She Googled Alex’s name. The top search results displayed a news article titled, “Lies, Lust, and Larceny: Linked Lovers.” She clicked on the first link. Multiple news outlets had picked up Matt Crown’s follow-up article in the New York Daily News that contained more of the same carefully couched speculation and misinformation about Alex’s involvement in her father’s death.

“Counterfeit?” Ethan’s outburst drew Tyler’s attention and a demand for him to explain it. “I dropped off two bottles of Barnette wine at a lab Wednesday. The tests concluded that the wines were not the same and had an entirely different chemical composition. That means the one from the resort is counterfeit.”

“That’s both good and bad news. Syd and John can salvage the Barnette reputation, but now they have to figure out who is stealing their wine.”

“Or intentionally sabotaging them.” Ethan’s comment contained an ominous tone, indicating that he felt he’d only scratched the surface of this mystery—and that he was determined to get to the bottom of it.
